Persevere for a Better Tomorrow

In the NTUC News dated 23 September 2005 , NTUC and its affiliated unions have pledged to do more to help workers tackle the challenges of the new economy by enhancing their employment prospects and to further protect their interests and welfare.

Reaffirming this commitment, NTUC Secretary-General Lim Boon Heng said the labour movement has laid down plans to address the main pre-occupation of workers job security and income stability through various initiatives.

To better enable the labour movement to dedicate more resources for members, union membership fee will be raised by $1 with effect from January 1 next year. Following the revision, union members will be paying $9 per month instead of the current $8 per month.

The decision to raise fees was accepted by the NTUC Central Committee after resisting it for the last four years due to uncertain economic conditions, even though the median wage of workers have risen from $1,700 in 2000 to $1,800 as at June 2004.

With the $1 increase, NTUC will channel the additional collections into programmes and activities for union members, with emphasis on the lower-income and needy members. Unions will also strengthen their support for these members.

Underlining the key priorities for the labour movement going forward, Mr Lim hoped that everyone can work together to contribute to these shared objectives, whether they are from the unions or the cooperatives.
