Fun, Families and a Fantastic time…
Billowing white tents dotted with blue and pink balloons and the smell of grilled Satay and fried chicken wafting though the breeze. The stage was set for the biggest blast of the year.
THE YUTES CARNIVAL 2008!!!
On our maiden venture, our youth committee, Young UTES, held its first carnival on the 20th of July 2008, Sunday at Fort Canning Park. The event was officiated by Mr. John De Payva, President of National Trades Union Congress. The event started at 11.30am and lasted till 5.00pm in the evening.
Each ticket purchased entitled our members to a lunch box of delicious Nasi Lemak, a goodie bag containing a beach mat and a battery operated radio cum torchlight, an opportunity to win fabulous prizes in the lucky draw and food & games coupons. The various branches had also set up food stalls to add an exclusive taste to the carnival selling a wide variety of food.
The carnival proved to be a fun filled event that served a dual purpose of allowing members to interact with their union reps as well as to spend quality time with their family members. Members were seen casually chatting with their respective union reps, laughing and sharing jokes as old friends would. Families had spread out their beach mats and created a picnic atmosphere for themselves.
Excited laughter, choruses of encouragement and disappointed sighs arose from the games stalls manned by our branch officials. Girls cooed over the beautiful henna designs our henna artist painted on their hands. Boys tried to outdo each other at archery. Our two lively mascots Bumble Bee and Tweety created a stir among the children who tagged along with them as they distributed balloons. Flashes went off left and right as parents tried to snap pictures of their children been cuddled by our mascots. Our talented Master of Ceremonies for the day DJ Maverick entertained the young and old alike with his enthusiastic stage games and vibrant compeering.
However the pie throwing counter was without doubt the greatest hit of the carnival. Our youth committee members gallantly volunteered themselves as targets for the game. Peals of laughter and shrieking protests could be heard from the counter as our youth tried to persuade participants to hit the target fixed to their abdomen. But most of them ended up with whipped cream all over their faces. Adult or child, none could resist the exhilaration of smashing cream into someone else’s face.
To make the day even more memorable we invited 35 children from Gracehaven to spend the day with us. Each branch sponsored the tickets for the children as a gesture of goodwill. They mingled with our members and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
To tie up the event, our branches went up against each other in a match of Tug of war with our special guests, a team of professional Tug of war players. Amidst the cheers and jeers, each branch put forth their best foot to defend their team.
We ended the day with a round of lucky draws, giving out some fabulous prizes to our elated winners. At the end of the day, everyone left with a satisfied smile. After our successful first venture, we are surely looking forward to our next Carnival. Maybe bigger and definitely better!
